Machine/industrial hearing

Description of the project offered:

A hearing can be considered as contactless sensing of the environment. It is passive, if sounds from different noise sources are observed. It is active, if a sound event is artificially generated and response to this event is observed. Active sensing is used for room acoustic measurements, measurements of material properties, for echolocalization and similar.
Research of machine hearing is focused on passive sensing, usually on the processing of a single microphone signal. Only few articles describe the application of acoustic camera (AC in further text) for sound source classification. In the available literature there is no reference on active acoustic sensing with the AC for gathering information intended for machine hearing. Technological advances will make such approach affordable and machine hearing will become one of the most important elements of autonomous intelligent systems. Therefore we are proposing the project “machine hearing”.
The basic idea of the project is to merge scientific fields of:
1. Acoustics (noise source visualization and echolocalization),
2. Signal processing (beamforming and pattern recognition),
3. Psychology (sound perception and auralization).
New knowledge of machine hearing can be implemented in wide range of new application. For example in systems for:
1. helping blind and visually impaired;
2. protection of workers in noisy environments with poor visibility;
3.identification of malfunctioning of machinery and equipment;
4.more accurate identification of noise sources in machinery;
5.identification of noise generating mechanisms; 6.planning and design of noise reduction;
7.modification of noise to less disturbing forms;
8.automation of measurement noise in the natural and living environment;
9.drivers and pilots assistance;
10.security in public events, and the fight against terrorism;
11.care for the elderly through analysis of human activities, and other.
